philosophy

the sky has plunged below the horizon
you call me to talk about
God, whom I have forgotten

my daughter laughs for laughter’s sake,

pulling me away from the
necessity of why and
how

I am worshipping her laughing face, clinging fiercely
to the tail of our dog, not waiting for dawn
to swing the earth around

someone has moved in upstairs, footsteps coming home
late, a cat in the window, we are taking the garbage out
to the curb

they have blown a circuit and
tonight, the street is pitch black, thick like
gum clinging to the underside of
the sky

the air is rich with
rotting fish, wet earth, my dog
flings her head into the air,
she trembles beneath my hand,
grinning, in the red-eyed dark
