kaleidoscope

scene 1:

pregnant women lounge, beached
around the water cooler

gypsies
who carry their burdens
under loose scarlet and gold skirts
painted eyes

watchful

and I, alone
because you left

scene 2:

today we’ve set our sights on bigger things

here the air
unconditioned

thick with hydrangea,
speculation -
last night’s rain

led, enchanted
through slender grass

we all discovered life
the same way

silver flash of fish
fighting upstream

unwilling to stumble
the course

scene 3:

the fog lifts
briefly

scene 4:

you -
slam your door on my
bare toes

paint shivering
on the frame

and
I no longer remember
what it looks like
inside

your struggling
heart
