god is in the rain

we are planning our failures
and

like water

you spill
freely

from my heart

you rose like bread in the morning
warm-scented and earthy

and for a moment i had you
in a quiet kitchen
flooded with light

before trembling like a kite-string
climbing into restricted
air-space
you form a brief sentence in which you use both
fate
and farewell

impossible

still
that breath is in my mouth

extending

brilliant and unsure
as our finger’s touch

but
when i said forever
unfortunately
i meant it

and we
stray

silence

in your cadence
i cannot grow

this conversation we never had
hanging accusingly
in the air waves

rain caressing the windows

between here and there
lightning-struck

i am
falling forward

alone

a cage left open
